The National Aquarium has a strong commitment to protecting the Earth’s biodiversity and habitats. With on-going conservation projects and public events, we work with other providers to undertake our guardianship role as Te Whare Tangaroa O Aotearoa.

Some of our activities include:

Seaweek 2 - 10 March 2013 Toiora te moana- Toiora te tangata Healthy Seas – Healthy People The 2013 theme highlights our many connections with the sea and calls on Kiwis from all walks of life to celebrate Tangaroa's realm, tackle issues such as pollution, pest species and illegal harvesting of the sea's bounty, and keep our seas healthy for all. Conservation Week 8 - 15 September 2013 Celebrate and experience New Zealand’s unique wildlife, natural areas and historic places.
Keep NZ Beautiful Week 16 - 23 September 2013 Let’s clean up our beaches and local environments for Keep NZ Beautiful Week. Come help the aquarium clean up our Marine Parade beach or encourage your school to develop an awareness of the problems with man-made products and their impact on the environment with a Waste Aware education programme.
Biodiversity Day 22 May 2013 The United Nations proclaimed May 22 The International Day for Biological Diversity (IBD) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues and the Convention of Biological Diversity that came into force in 1993. It is a celebration of life on earth and of the value of biodiversity for our lives.
World Ocean’s Day 8 June 2013 Did you know that we get half our oxygen supply from the seaweeds in the ocean? The ocean covers more than 70 percent of the planet's surface and supports all living organisms. It has been a vital source of sustenance, transport, commerce, growth, and inspiration. The ocean is one of our most important and under-researched resources with only five percent of this realm having been explored. Visit us to celebrate the ocean world and take action to help protect its future.
NZ Frog Week 8 - 15 September 2013 We aim to promote awareness of the importance of frogs and the conservation of New Zealand’s unique frogs! During the week there will be displays, competitions and live frogs at the aquarium.
