Here are some suggestions for Secondary student research possibilities:
Science Alive programme
We will help students carry out a fair test for their project using our residents and aquatic resources.
Some ideas could be:
-
Does water temperature cause fish to swim at different speeds?
-
Will x or y food cause more growth in fish?
-
Does oxygen weed grow more with increased carbon dioxide?
-
Can seaweed forecast the weather?
Y11 NCEA AS90161 1.1
Y12 NCEA AS90457 2.1
Y13 NCEA AS90713 3.1
-
Carry out investigation into an aspect of the ecological niche, inter-relationships and community pattern of an organism with guidance.
-
For example, students could:
-
Using a supply of brine shrimp/naupli measure dissolved oxygen and the effects of pollution. Measure their grotwh in different temperatures ie 18degrees, 22 degrees, 26 degrees.
Design your own research
Using our library, collections and some equipment. We can be flexible in providing assistance with your programmes.
Assessment
You may want to think about using the aquarium to do a formative assessment at any of the 3 levels prior to doing the summative assessment at school. This could be an opportunity to discuss experimental design, fair testing, independent and dependent variables, how we control other variables, etc, and then on experiments could be set up and run at the aquarium.
