Youth Voices Shine: Hawke’s Bay Climate Storytelling

Spoken Word Winner Jack

Jack, Senior Winner

Radio Hawke’s Bay held a competition this year for intermediate and senior youth to develop their creative, critical and presentation skills in a non-classroom setting. Linking the event to World Ocean Day gives gravitas to our Hawkes Bay Rangitahi so that they can shine a spotlight on our plight in Aotearoa New Zealand.

All cultures have a tradition of spoken word story telling. In this arena youth were encouraged to embrace who they are and portray their message in a way that reflects the global impact that they wish to have.
Each piece of spoken word required the youths involved to develop communication styles and strategies that are not necessarily used in daily interactions.

Our youth have amazing insight into the problems the planet is facing, and they are invested in change. Hawke’s Bay has been through a lot already, and scientists have indicated we have more to come. The youth in these age groups have firsthand experience of climate change.

"Partnering with the National Aquarium of New Zealand enables the world to see our commitment to the development of a just, equitable society led by youth to heal our planet." - Radio Hawke's Bay.

This video shows the finalists recording their mahi in at Radio Hawke's Bay's Hastings studios. They hope that wherever you are when watching this video, you appreciate the work and passion that each entrant has shown.
