The Kiwi Art Trail is heading to Napier and needs two local artists to get on board. The city-wide art installation sees 20 kiwi sculptures pop up along the cycleway on Napier’s coastline. Among them will be two given a local twist by Napier artists.
The Kiwi Art Trail will launch its Napier run in November as part of a national tour of four cities. In each location, local artists will have a chance to contribute. The initiative is made possible through a partnership between Save the Kiwi, Gallagher Insurance New Zealand and the National Aquarium of New Zealand, with support from Napier City Council.
Rachel Haydon, General Manager of the National Aquarium, says the partnership is about sharing a commitment to an iconic species.
“At the end of the kiwi tour, the sculptures will be auctioned, with proceeds donated to kiwi conservation work,” Rachel explains. “Our region has a strong kiwi conservation history and we are dedicated to the protection of this treasured species.”
“The Kiwi Art Trail offers an enjoyable, new way to engage the community with kiwi and the organisations that work hard to help protect them.”
During the Kiwi Art Trail, which will run from 23 November to late December, people will be able to explore 20 kiwi sculptures turned into art works by New Zealand artists. This free, family-friendly art installation celebrates New Zealand’s national icon and builds awareness and support for kiwi conservation efforts.
Hawke’s Bay artists who would like to be involved can find out more on the Kiwi Art Trail website.
