Coordinated internationally by The Ocean Project since 2002, World Ocean Day is an annual celebration on 8 June as well as a call for ocean conservation action throughout the year. Starting in 2009, World Ocean Day has also been officially recognized by the United Nations. This celebration of our one shared ocean brings together range of organisations and individuals from schools, aquariums, and zoos to businesses and recreational enthusiasts.
This year we’re getting involved with some fun activities:
When: 8am (NZ Time), Wednesday 9 June
We’re super excited to have partnered with Fins Magazine for this special with our special friend Mermaid Ria. Join us via Zoom to learn about Little Penguins, where they live, their roles in marine ecosystems, what is happening in their environment today and what can be done to reduce human impacts on their environments. Fins Magazineand CILC will be supporting World Ocean Day with live mermaids from all parts of the world – visiting and interviewing experts at aquariums, zoos, marine centres and more. Register for the National Aquarium live stream and check out other live events around the world!
This is a free event, but you’ll need to register.
If you’re lucky enough to be visiting us on World Ocean Day don’t forget to pick up a fun Octonauts colouring sheet to complete. If you’re unable to pop in for a visit, don’t worry, we've got it here so you can download it.
Learn about a little penguin who was rescued, rehabilitated and released back into the wild by watching this short (true) story that we compiled for Seaweek this year. It's told by our wonderful educators Jacqui and Karlie.
