Become a Volunteer

Do you have a passion for the ocean, do you have a drive to help with conservation issues, would you love to inspire others to live more sustainably and to help preserve our oceans biodiversity?

Here at the National Aquarium of New Zealand, we are always on the lookout for energetic, friendly, sensational and engaging future volunteers, who are willing to donate some of their valuable time to us, our animals and guests.

Volunteer Roles Explained

• Engagement Assistants: This role will involve activities such as, being a presence within the aquarium for people to interact with and ask question of, being an extra guide on busy days, Becoming one of our beloved mascots and mascot minders, helping with exit surveys and more.
• Exhibit Engagement Guides: Will be positioned in front of one of up to five in total exhibits, where they will deliver interactive activities (such as a touch table or creative activities) that will promote the species and environment that they are assigned to, using killer facts and inspiring stories.
• Education Activity Helpers: These volunteers will only be required when needed by our education team, to assist with the delivery of the curriculum based education programming run here at the aquarium. This could mean something like helping at a rocky shore field trip.
• Conservation Crew: These volunteers will help the aquarium in our conservation work and that of other conservation partners, this will be again periodic and would include organised beach clean ups and supporting replanting projects.
• Aquarium Ambassadors: These volunteers will be helping with the cruise ship season, welcoming the passengers and guiding them around the aquarium and being a presence at the I-site to encourage visitors to the aquarium. The ambassadors will also be needed to help on special occasions during other times of the year, for such things as conference delegate support.
