National Aquarium Visitor Information

We have two accessible parking spaces located at the front of the Aquarium building, close to the main entrance.

Wheelchair Access

The Aquarium is wheelchair accessible with a lift to level one in the main foyer (there are only two levels). We also have wheelchairs you can borrow – just ask one of the team at the front desk when you arrive

Disability Assist Dogs

The Aquarium building allows the entry of Disability Assist Dogs for those requiring essential assistance. However, there are a few exhibits where dogs are prohibited due to the potential stress to the animals in the exhibit, and your dog. In particular, this applies to Penguin Cove. Thank you in advance for your understanding.

If you’d like to bring your dog to assist you while at the Aquarium, we recommend giving us a call prior to your visit on 06 834 1404, as there are some terms and conditions that need to be adhered to. In a nutshell though, dogs are welcome provided they are essential, are managed at all times, and owners can present evidence of their Disability Assist Dog registration upon arrival.

Accessible toilets are located at ground level in the café and retail space, and inside the East Coast LAB education area.

Please note some areas of the Aquarium have reduced light levels related to the needs of the animals, especially in the nocturnal habitat where our Kiwi live.

National Aquarium of New Zealand | Napier | Sensory BagsWhether you would like help dealing with the stimulating aquarium environment or want a few extra activities to help remain engaged, a sensory adventure bag can help.

A delicious range of hot and cold counter food including sandwiches, cakes, muffins and slices. We also have great coffee, homemade cookies, and a range of ice creams and ice blocks. Open 9.00am – 4.30pm

For special gifts and souvenirs, our gift shop stocks a wide range of unique items for all budgets from marine-themed gifts to classic New Zealand souvenirs. Open 9.00am – 4.30pm

Toilets and baby changing facilities are located throughout the Aquarium.

Photography onsite

Throughout most of the National Aquarium of New Zealand you’re welcome to use your camera to take photos and video for personal, non-commercial use.
Flash photography is not permitted in any part of the venue.
This includes photos of:

  • People, with their permission, and public events
  • Our exhibits and wildlife
  • Most National Aquarium of New Zealand interiors

Look out for signage indicating exhibits that cannot be filmed or photographed. This may be for reasons to protect the wildlife.
Selfie sticks are permitted in the National Aquarium of New Zealand. Other equipment such as tripods, monopods, and lighting require prior permission from Management.  Please contact us for permission.

Photography For Commercial Use

Unless you’ve received prior permission from us, you must not sell or profit from the photography, film, or video or any other form of reproduction you take at the National Aquarium of New Zealand, or use it for commercial purposes.
